Jeannie McLean, author - Crime Fiction and freelance writer

For reasons unknown (there is sure to be something in my past) I tend to write pacy thriller/crime/mystery stories with a baddie or two and a bit of blood. Generally, the goodies win - but, not always.

I've been writing ever since I was at primary school in Australia. My first success came when I was in high school and I won first prize for a short story.

I moved to New Zealand and kept writing. My first two published novels were 'Such Good Mates' and 'Impact'. Since then I have had two chapter books published, 'Being Theo' and 'A Few Minutes' and a non-fiction magazine for young adult readers called 'Fab'.

I have had two short stories for young adults awarded Highly Commended in a national competition and more recently, a short story for adults was Highly Commended in a short story competition.

This year I'm a student on an advanced writing course run by The Creative Hub where participants submit their work to be critiqued - somewhat daunting, and we have a number of workshops lead by New Zealand authors.

As well as working full-time, I try to fit in as much writing time as I can, but I also like to read and go to movies. I am working on two Young Adult novels, both with crime/mystery themes and some short stories.

And I always seem to have a head full of possible story starters.
